Hawaii Day 7- Part 1- Haleakala

We got up at 2:00 am and took a van ride up to Haleakala, a 10,000 foot volcano to watch the sunrise.  Haleakala means "house of the sun" in Hawaiian.  It was really windy and cold at the top but watching the sun rise over the volcano's crater was a once in a lifetime experience and definitely worth getting up early for.  After watching the sunrise our guide set us up with our mountain bikes and gear and we literally rode down the side of the volcano all the way out to the ocean.  This part was a bit scary on the twisty roads with cars flying by.  The biking part was fun once but I don't think I'd do that part of it again.  We stopped for breakfast at the little town of Makawao and had some croissants and hot chocolate before finishing our ride with beautiful views of the valley and ocean below.

Sounds a bit like the scary tobaggan experience in Switzerland. Glad you made it down safely.
