We may not be able to wear shorts and flip flops during the winter like many of you in wonderfully warm climates, but we do get to do some other fun things here in good ol' Minnesota.
Like for example, shovel our driveway after the snowplow has knocked over huge piles of snow partially blocking our exit.
Or shovel our mail box out so we (and our neighbors- the mail box is in the corner of our yard) can receive mail and not get yelled at by the cranky mail lady.
Not sounding too fun you say... well here are 3 FUN things we do get enjoy in the WINTER...
1. SLEDDING! This is one of our favorite winter activities. After every snow the kids ask if they can go sledding. If the temp is above 5 degrees I usually comply. If you think I'm crazy and that this is way too cold here is our school's policy for cold weather recess- Elementary school students are expected to go outdoors for recess, unless the wind chill factor falls below –5°F.
Anyways, we love sledding and luckily we have the perfect little sledding hill in our backyard. We took Camille on her first sled ride a few weeks ago. She loved it despite her not so sure look in the picture and cried when we came back in the house!

2. Ice Skating- We took the kids over to the park behind Matt & Erin's house last week to ice skate. I found ice skates for both Adam & Anna at a used kids store last year. At $4.50 a pair I couldn't resist even though we'd never tried ice skating before. They definitely need to practice more but we ended up having a great time out on the ice. Erin mentioned bringing some sleds and those ended up being the highlight of the night.

3. Building Snowmen- Building snowmen is another cold weather favorite here. The kids have gotten pretty good and if the conditions are right they can make an impressive snowman. This last weekend Mike helped the kids make a 6ft tall Frosty out in our front yard. Unfortunately there were no pictures of Frosty and he is now doing a near back bend after the freezing rain the last few days. We're making bets on when he will bend too far and reach his demise.

Those are fun pictures! Here is a tip for ice skating outside-- let them use a folding chair to learn to skate. Take the folding shari with you, then open it up on the ice and it becomes a little "walker" they push in front of them as they learn to balance.
I think that's a great school recess policy. Here, the rule is they don't go out if it's less than 50 degrees(!!!!). I only found that out because my son (who was going WILD) told me they hadn't been out for recess for weeks; in Idaho we just took half the school day getting in and out of our snow clothes and went for it!
The babies look so cute in their little sleds! What a fun family night. Maybe we can end this Morris "no skate" trend with this generation, ha ha!
